KONA YA PRO, JULAI 2014: NUTRITION FOR ATHLETES IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE TO THEIR PERFOMANCE

Diet, like the word
“nutrition”, means all the food a person eats and drinks. Diet directly affects
the performance and health of each athlete.
Coaches should be aware that
athletes’s eating and drinking patterns will influence how well they can train
and whether they are able to complete at their best.
Coaches should work with
athletes to develop healthy diets where they are individually aware of their
personal nutritional goals and of how they can select the nutrition to meet
these goals.
A well chosen diet
offers many benefits to all athletes, regardless of event, gender, age or level
of competition. These benefits include:
a. Optimal gains from the
training programme.
b. Enhanced recovery within
and between training sessions and competitions.
c. Achievement and
maintenance of an optimum body weight and physique.
d. A reduced risk of injury
and illness.
e. Confidence in being well
prepared for competition.
f.
Enjoyment of food and social eating situations.
Despite these advantages
many athletes do not meet their nutritional goals. The reasons for this can
include:
a. Poor knowledge of foods
and drinks
b. Coaches having poor or
outdated knowledge of sports nutrition
c. Poor choices when buying
food
d. Inadequate cooking
skills
e. Inadequate finances
f.
A
busy lifestyle leading to inadequate time to obtain, prepare or consume
appropriate foods
g. Poor availability of
good and drink choices
h. Frequent travel
i.
Indiscriminate
and incorrect use of supplements and sports food.
Next time we will look
at the way food can play a very important part in successful training and
competition. We will look at why the body needs food, which sorts of food are
good for us, which are unnecessary and which are not so good and why. But first
we should understand what we mean by “nutrition”.
NUTRITION means all the
food a person eats and drinks. The whole
human body is made from this food, and all energy comes from food. The food
acts in the body as a fuel, providing energy and chemicals for movements growth
and keep the body healthy. What we need nutritionally is affected by our age, gender, physique,
level of physical activity and state of health.

KONA YA PRO, JULAI 2014: B'E BRAZUCA NA JUMUIYA MADOLA ZASHANGAZA DUNIA

Katika kipengele hiki
tutaangazia matukio makubwa yaliyotukia kwenye mwezi Julai mwaka huu ambapo tumeshuhudia Kombe la
Dunia nchini Brazil na Michuano ya Jumuiya Madola ikirindima jijini Glasgow
nchini Scotland.

Lilianza Juni 12 kwa
kutumia mpira uliopachikwa jina la Brazuca, kwa wenyeji Brazil kufungua dimba
dhidi ya Croatia ambapo walishinda mabao 3-1, ikiwa ni mtanange wa kundi A.
Marcelo Viera aliweka
rekodi ya kuwa wa kwanza kufumania nyavu alipojifunga hivyo kuwa mchezaji wa
kwanza tangu Kombe la Dunia lianzishwe mwaka 1930, kujifunga kwa timu mwenyeji.
Aidha katika Kombe hilo
kulishuhudiwa bingwa mtetezi Hispania akipokea kichapo cha mabao 5-1 kutoka
Uholanzi, kisha 2-0 kutoka Chile na kuondolewa licha ya kushinda 3-0 dhidi ya
Australia.
Hata hivyo haikuishia
hapo kichapo cha mabao 7-1 ilichopokea Brazil kutoka kwa Ujerumani katika Kombe
hilo ndicho kilichoacha gumzo kubwa kwani haijawahi kutokea katika hatua ya
nusu fainali.
Pia timu za barani
Afrika ambazo ni Cameroon, Algeria, Ghana, Nigeria na Ivory Coast zilijitahidi
kucheza mchezo wa kuvutia licha ya kutofika mbali.
Algeria na Nigeria ndizo
pekee zilizonusa hatua ya 16 bora baada ya kutoka katika hatua ya makundi (32).
Algeria ilipambana na Ujerumani wakati Nigeria ikitoana jasho na Ufaransa.
Fainali ilichezwa katika
uga wa Maracana Jijini Rio De Janeiro kati ya Ujerumani na Argentina ambapo
Ujerumani (Die Mannschafts) ikivunja rekodi kwa kulinyakua kwa mara ya kwanza
kutoka ardhi ya Amerika ya Kusini kwa kuizaba Albicelestes kwa bao 1-0
lilifungwa katika dakika ya 114 na Mario Gotze akitokea benchi.
Kubwa zaidi Miroslav
Klose (Ujerumani) alivunja rekodi kwa kuwa mfungaji mwenye mabao mengi ya Kombe
la Dunia akifikisha 17 na kuvunja rekodi ya Ronaldo de Lima aliyefunga mabao

Kiatu cha dhahabu
kilikwenda kwa nyota kutoka Colombia, James Rodriguez aliyetupia mabao 6 katika
michuano hiyo iliwanyima raha wabrazil wakimaliza kwa kichapo cha mabao 3-0
kutoka Uholanzi.
Michuano ya
Jumuiya ya Madola, Glasgow-Scotland
Maajabu hutokea kwani
shilingi ni ndogo inazama kwenye maji lakini meli ni kubwa haizami; michuano ya
Jumuiya ya Madola ilianza siku 10 baada ya kumalizika kwa Kombe la Dunia nchini
Brazil yaani Julai 23 katika Jiji la Glasgow nchini Scotland.
Michuano hii
hushirikisha nchi ambazo zilitawaliwa na Mwingereza katika medani ya michezo,
hivyo michezo mbalimbali huwepo katika michuano hiyo Judo, riadha, ngumi za
ridhaa, kuogolea, mpira wa meza na kadhalika.
Tanzania imeambulia
patupu katika michezo mitano iliyoenda kuwakilisha katika michuano hiyo huko
ughaibuni, wakati nchi jirani ya Kenya imetwaa medali 25 huku England ikiongoza
kwa kuwa na medali nyingi.
Michuano hiyo imefungwa Agosti
3, mwaka huu kukishuhudia vifijo na nderemo vikipigwa katika Jiji la Glasgow.
Mkimbiaji anayeshikilia
rekodi ya dunia ya kasi Usain Bolt siku ya Jumamosi ya Agosti 2 alitwaa medali
ya dhahabu katika mbio za relay 4×400.
Bolt alimkung’uta
Mwingereza Danny Talbot aliyemaliza wa pili akikimbia kwa sekunde 37.58 huku
Talbot akimaliza kwa sekunde 38.02
Bolt anajiandaa na mbio
za Diamond IAAF za Agosti 28 katika uga wa Lepzig ambako anatarajiwa kuwa
tishio zaidi.
Huku Danny Talbot
akijiweka katika matumaini makubwa ya kunyakua medali katika Michuano ya
Ubingwa wa Ulaya itakayofanyika baadaye mwezi ujao.
Haya ni matukio makubwa
mawili yaliyojiri mwezi Julai na kukonga nyoyo za mashabiki duniani.

Katika mbio za Mt.
Kilimanjaro Marathon 2014 alishika nafasi ya pili kwa kutumia muda wa saa
1:14.20 akitanguliwa na Hilary Hendry kwa muda wa saa 1:08.10
Otto kama ambavyo
amekuwa akijulikana na wengi alisoma Elimu yake Msingi katika Misheni ya
Potwe-Ndondondo wilayani Muheza kuanzia mwaka 1984-1991.
Ottoman Seki ndio
